Learning Languages is a Slow Process

Learning a new language is a process that requires time and patience.

Sure you can learn a few local words and expressions before taking a short trip to a foreign country but if your goal is to communicate effectively in that language and to understand native speakers without an automatic translator, then you need a long-term study plan.

Unless you have a specific business or academic reason for learning a language fast (in which case we recommend you look for an intensive course), studying one hour a day for one year is typically more effective than studying ten hours a day for one month.

Try to enjoy the learning process and don’t forget that mistakes are the best teacher. Don’t be afraid to speak the language with native speakers or with other learners. Many people focus a lot on grammar rules but freeze when they have to go out there and use what they have learned.

  1. Hi

Italian is such a beautiful  language to hear and to speak but the again I am half Italian. It is difficult  to choose what programme to go for, as you do not know to what level it will be pitched at. Will it be too basic? Will it be too slow?. So many questions and so much uncertainty.  I am glad you have highlighted the best online lessons as with good tutelage  you can easily improve. The only drawback I can see is that you will not have a partner to practice on, ad in my experience  you often improve through role playing.

I have one concern, as Italians especially in the  South tend to speak dialect, will that be covered in the courses?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    1. Hi Antonio. The first three websites we have reviewed in this article all offer basic courses for beginners. The three YouTube channels mentioned in the second part of the article contain videos for language learners of all levels. These YouTube channels also provide useful videos about the use of regional dialects in the various areas of the country. It is true that in some regions (especially in the South and in the North East) the use of local dialects is quite common, but standard Italian is still the only official language and many people use it in their everyday life.

  2. Thanks I really wish I had seen this article two years ago before dong a tour of Tuscany and Venice, I may have had a go. But the opportunity is not wasted we plan as a family to return in a couple of years when all of this is over. I am going to check out some of your recommendation anyway and see if I can be ahead of the game.

    Thanks for the post

    Hamish

  4. Its a fact that Italian is one of the most spoken all over the world and this has made it mandatory that at a point get me has to know how to dialect wit it especially when you intend to travel. Some people learn it for fun while others may want to learn it for immigration purposes. This has made it necessary to set up online classes that would help you at any point in time learn how to speak Italian language. The online classes are in various courses and they are built to suite your time and preference so be sure to go for the one that suite’s you more

  5. Hi,

Thanks for sharing this information. I visit Italy a couple of time per year, as I live in the French alps and it is only about 1 hour 30 minutes from me. This could be really useful for me when we stray over the border. I would need to start at the very beginning.

  6. I must say this sis really nice I have always wanted to learn Italian but I didn’t just work out so I have to dump the idea and go for Spanish…and I have been able to achieve my Spanish speaking status although I am not that fluent yet…but I know with time I would…but with this outline I think I can learn Italian….but is it a good idea adding it to.my Spanish classes?

    1. Italian and Spanish have a lot of things in common. Sometimes it can be confusing to learn both languages at the same time but once you reach a good level of Spanish, you’ll find learning Italian much easier (and vice versa).

  7. Awesome! I would like to speak in Italian someday so, I need to learn the structure of this language. Many friends speak Italian because they lived in Italia and I don’t understand what they say. I want to apply for a job in a big company and the requirements are to speak at least three languages; currently, I speak English and Spanish and I want to learn Italian as my third language.

This article is so interesting because it provides all info about several free Italian lessons online. I will take it. I hope these platforms work well. Thanks for the info, I will share it with my friends.

    1. Good luck with learning Italian, Andres! Speaking Spanish can definitely be an advantage, especially when it comes to vocabulary.
